Our New York Film Collaborator Berton Williams attended the screening of The Hangover Part III and this is what he has to say….

The Hangover Part III
The whole crew is back. Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Doug (Justin Bartha) and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) are still the characters hangover fans know and love. With the box office success of the first 2 films, it was almost certain that there would be a third installment in the Hangover series. After seeing how the first two films stuck to a formula of trying to retrace the steps of an evening that clearly did not go according to plan, filmmaker Todd Phillips was almost forced to take the now familiar story devices in a different direction. In the conclusion to unforgettable and regrettable hangovers for Stu, Doug, Phil and Alan, this is the film about how the Wolfpack handles life’s challenges, sober. Interestingly enough, this movie plays like the morning after the morning after. As Phil foreshadows, “It all ends tonight,” The Hangover part III attempts to be action, adventure and road trip but in many ways falls short of the spirit of the first two films.
At the heart of this film are two meandering stories. Alan suffers a major tragedy that leads him and his brethren on an epic road trip they didn’t intend. En route to getting Alan help they are intercepted by Marshall (John Goodman) who is more menacing than funny in his roll as a guy looking to settle a debt owed to him by Chow (Ken Jeong). The second story or maybe the real focal point, is the escape of Chow from a Thai prison and his search for money and a good time. Plot was never a strong suit of the series but this film tries too hard to come up with one in search of big laughs.
There’s a lot of comedic talent sprinkled throughout this film. At times this movie comes across as a vehicle for Zach Galifianakis’ Alan to duel with Ken Jeong’s Chow but the funniest moments come from much of the supporting cast. There rarely is a comedy where too much comedic talent is a bad thing. Here, too much comedic talent is wasted and many of those little scenes that can make a movie, seem forced.
After it’s all said and done, it’s really hard to say who this movie was made for. For the series fan, many of the big laughs are mere chuckles. For those who are simply curious in how this all ends, I don’t see this film changing your mind if you’re on the fence about the series. And for those who this may be their introduction to the Hangover, you are forced to see one or both of the other two afterward and it still won’t make sense in the end. All the elements are here for the big laughs you come to expect from the franchise but this one falls flat as a hangover film that is really about the previous two hangovers.

Small surprise: Of course they couldn’t leave us without so if you decide to venture out to see this one spend some time watching the credits. I’ll just say they couldn’t end the movie without at least one “hangover”.
